1. Do some keyword research and see how much advertisers are paying for the keywords that you will be targeting in your articles and find out the average search volume for these keywords.
2. Use the google adwords keyword tool for free. adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
Type in your main keyword phrase and click on get keyword ideas. In the columns to display drop down menu, select:

By seeing the avg CPC information you will be able to see what the highest paying keywords are for your niche. You will not be getting that much per click, but you can see which keywords are the best topics to write about.
The approx avg search volume will show you the approximate average monthly number of search queries matching your keywords that were performed on Google.
After doing this research and you find that there is a small market for your topic and on average your keywords are being bid for a few cents, then you might want to pick a different topic so you can actually earn some decent income with google adsense.
There is no reason to start a website or blog and fill it up with great content if you have few people visiting your site and are displaying google ads that will make you pennies per click.
Do some keyword research and find the profitable niches so you can make a good income with google adsense.

Google Tools
The most important thing is to see what Google says about your website performance. First, you need to analyze your website using Google Webmaster tools.
It is a free service provided by Google to help you not only with the website speed but also with other issues. To find the service, just Google its name - it will be the first page in the results.
Then register your website o the Google Webmaster tool website.
During the registration, you need to put a piece of the code or the file into your website. This will allow Google to verify that the web is yours.
On the left hand site, there is a menu 'Labs'. There, under 'Site Performance' you will find your website's performance data as seen by Google's eyes.
This also compares your site performance to other sites. It shows you how your site stands.
Note, that it might take a few days after registration for you to receive any good performance data. If you want to find out quickly, how fast is website or blog, there is another way.
Page Speed
The fastest and the most elegant way is to install Page Speed. It is an open-source Firefox Add-on (plugin). It is also recommended by Google. It can be used to evaluate the performance of your web pages and to get suggestions on how to improve them.
This plug-in will also pinpoint the specific problems on your website. The problems are sorted by importance/priority, which allows you to deal with the most serious problems first.
The most interesting thing is that this plugin shows you the specific suggestions for improvement. You can fix them or let your webmaster to fix them. Or even better - ask your webmaster to use Page Speed to analyze the whole website and fix the problems.
After some time, check again with Google Webmaster Tools to see how the performance of your website is changing.
