There are various methods of building a website. Whether you want to build one completely from scratch or make one in the simplest way possible, you can do so. Some things you need to consider before getting started are:

Hiring a Web Designer

The most expensive method is to hire a professional web designer. This, however, can be pretty costly. Expect to pay around 0 or more, depending on the designer's level of experience and rates. The good news is that, providing you hire the right individual to do the job, you can expect your site to come out extremely professional looking! You will also have a unique layout, which means you won't have to worry about your site looking like anyone else's.

Using Software

Many people choose to use software such as Dreamweaver, Coffee Cup, or Microsoft FrontPage. The price can range anywhere from to 0, depending on which program you want to use. Some people find the basics easy to grasp and some people do not. For this reason, you need to download a free trial version of web development software and experiment with it. Download free website templates from the internet and try to edit them. If you have no idea what you're doing, cancel the trial and choose a simpler method.

FTP Software

If you make a website and save it on your computer, you need to upload it to the internet in order for people to see it. You can do this with an FTP client. Some hosting providers will allow you to upload your site through their FTP client. There is also software you can download to upload your website files yourself. Check and see what your hosting company offers and determine whether or not you'll need a third party FTP client.

Online Website Builders

If you build your website online, with a hosting account or WordPress, you won't have to upload everything to the internet, since it will already be there. Many hosting accounts provide website builders at no additional costs. They include templates, add-ons, scripts, fonts, logos, and so forth. They provide step-by-step guides and tutorials on how to build a website. This is the easiest and most affordable option for most people.

A WYSIWYG editor, such as the one provided by WordPress, is a website creation tool that doesn't require any knowledge or experience at all. You can actually watch what you are creating as you are creating it. Furthermore, some of these editors are free! You won't need any hosting unless you want your own domain, rather than one provided to you. Now, most people use WYSIWYG editors such as WordPress for creating blogs, but these days, blogs can contain more than just articles. They can contain images, polls, videos, contact forms, etc.

If you want your website put up quickly, your best bet is with an online WYSIWYG editor or a website builder that comes with a hosting service. The downside to these is that the results don't appear as professional as they would if you hired an expert to make one for you, or if you were to build one from scratch. Consider what you want with a website, and what you hope to accomplish, and choose the building method accordingly.

Building your own website is not difficult, there are many great programs to use, people do it every day. But, it is like moving. Chances are you know you want to move, you know you have to move, but you are not packed, don't have a map, don't know where you are going, have wrong information about where you are going and don't know how to get there.

One of the most common issues I run into with new clients is a lack of content. After we get past how much the website is going to cost and start planning it, I ask about content. I usually get a blank stare, or they offer me a token 3 pages of information. Then I have to go into my long, boring, "all about content" speech...which you are getting right now.

If this is your first website, you are probably not thinking in terms of performance or the website making you money, you are thinking about how it looks.

Focusing on looks primarily can lead you into a ditch. At the end of the day, after your website is built and you are used to it and have had it for a year or so, the newness wears off and you start to focus on the real elements of the website: functionality and traffic.

Without going into great detail about SEO, it is fair to say that if there was one singular item that will enable the success of your website it is content. New, fresh, original content, and you probably don't have much of it.

You are better off if you start to develop your content before you start building your website. If you have your content ready to go, that means you are ready to start building your site, you are ready to move. It makes it much easier on the person or company building the website also. Developing your content and building a website are two different things and it is easier to do one at a time.

At the core of good content is keywords.

When I say successful, I mean you get as much free traffic as you can, from the people who have a good chance of buying from you or using your services, not lookie loos or tire kickers, real prospective customers.

One of the easiest ways to get an idea of good keywords is to use the free Google keyword tool. Type in just one of your main words and see what pops up, make a list, remove ones that are not relevant or you don't think will bring the right traffic and you should have a good list to work from.

The main words should be the main navigation items of your new site. The main nav items should have pages that have the main keyword in the file name, page title and at least one H1 tag. Use the other related words on that main page. You can find related words when you type in the main word. If you can prepare at least 15 to 25 pages of content, organized by keyword, then you are ready to build your new website.

Bear in mind that the more original, relevant copy you have on your site, the greater chance you have of people linking to it. It must be updated and added to often, but that is a subject for another article.

An easy way to develop good content is to make a list of the top ten questions your customers ask you, the most common. Write them down and then answer them, in detail. Then think of all the questions your customers should be asking you but are not. Write those down, with detailed answers. If this technique doesn't give you a good amount of content, pretend you are at a mixer or social gathering and people are asking you about your business, what would they ask? How would you answer? This can be another good technique for coming up with good copy.

For most of us, writing is difficult. If you are blessed with the ability to write, know that you are a special person in terms of the Internet. One of the most valuable things on the Web is original content. Original content is like honey to the bee in terms of traffic, so if you can write you have one up on everyone else.

If writing is hard work, like it is for me, you may want to hire a copywriter. Copywriters are not as expensive as you think, most are easy to work with and many are SEO and Web savvy. Many of my clients will have a brief phone conversation with a copywriter and we will receive well written, SEO'd content within a day or so...ready to go on the website, it is well worth the money.

After you have your content, then it is time to look at layout. Look at your competitors and compare your website to theirs. Make sure to position yourself against your competitors. Make sure you site can be navigated easily and people can find what they are looking for quickly.

Furthermore, check all your links and graphics making sure that all hyperlinks and source links are functioning as they should. Broken links can be a cause for rejecting your website.

Google also has a set of Quality Guidelines to which you must adhere in order to gain an approval. The Quality Guidelines and Program Policies lay forth exactly what is expected regarding your website's content and other qualifications for membership into Google AdSense. All of these are easily accessible on the Google AdSense website. Granted not many people enjoy reading anyone's terms of service and policies, but in the case of AdSense it is a necessity.

Second, you need to decide whether you're signing up as an individual or business. The revenue you generate is taxable and you are advised to seek the counsel of an accountant in making this decision. Google asks whether you are registering as an individual or business.

Third, you need to open a checking account. In the application process Google will ask for information on where they can send your commission checks. It is advised that once you have your AdSense account setup that you switch to automatic deposit.

Once you have taken these three steps you are ready to make your request for a Google AdSense account. One mistake that so many aspiring AdSense publishers make is that they do not read the Terms of Service. Google is very specific about the requirements and they are very diligent in seeing that they are obeyed. If you're sloppy in the application process and after, you're experience with AdSense will be very unfulfilling. Don't miss out on an opportunity to generate income because of laziness or a nonchalant attitude.

Your approval is based only on the initial website submission. After you are approved you can submit as many websites as you like on a variety of topics. This does not mean that you can publish websites contrary to Google's Terms and Service, but you are given a little more latitude in publishing your websites.

Maybe you don't have a website but you wish to have an account. If this is the case Google allows you to sign up for a free blog at the company owned website http://blogger.com, allowing you to use this for your website submission. For an easy approval it is suggested that you take this route. Once you are approved then you can begin submitting your other websites.

AdSense Secret - Getting Targeted Ads

AdSense publishers make money by getting clicks on the ads which display on their websites. There are many ways to build profitable AdSense websites, but too often webmasters complain that they are not getting the right kind of ads to display, or their clicks are extremely low paying. So forums and message boards are constantly filled with the same types of questions: How do I make AdSense perform better on my site?

And the answer is quite simple. It really is all about the content. AdSense is a contextual advertising service. This means it is specifically designed to show ads which it feels are related to the content it finds on your pages. And there are certain types of content on a website page which will carry more weight than others, so the AdSense system may display ads based on small portions of your page instead of the entire thing.

One of the most common problems new webmasters have is when they set up a blog to run AdSense on. They quickly find that no matter how much content they add to the site, the AdSense ads insist on running ads about blogging - even if this blog has nothing to do with blogging itself.

The reason this happens is usually caused due to something in the content of your pages. It's often related to the title of a website page, the meta tags on that page, or the headers being used on the pages. Let's look at this in more detail...

1. Website titles.

Each page of your website should always have a unique title that is specifically related to the content on your page. The title of a website page can be seen at the very top of your website browser when you visit the page. If your website title has the word "blog" in it, you increase the chances of AdSense thinking your site is about blogging, thus is may start showing ads all about blogging.

So instead of creating a website or web page title which says "My blog", try changing that to something that relates to the content of your blog. If you're writing about your weight loss success for instance, then make your website page titles say something like "my weight loss success".

2. Meta Tags.

Too many people wrongly believe that website meta tags are no longer important. And I'll repeat: They are wrong. Meta tags may not have as much influence on your search engine rankings as they used to, but they are still used for a variety of things. And one thing they have a heavy influence on, is the type of AdSense ads which will be displayed on your website pages.

Just by putting a few, relevant keywords into a keyword meta tag on each of your website pages, you'll see a difference in the targeting of your AdSense ads. If you put several good, relevant keywords into a meta tag though, plus add a meta tag description for your website, you will see drastic differences in how well the ads are targeted. And often you'll see the newly targeted ads start showing up within minutes of making these small changes.

3. Header Tags.

The header tags used within your website are those which have H1, H2, H3 and so on around them. These are called header tags, and they are there to help with layout, formatting, and organization of a website page. The words you put into these tags however, have a major influence on the types of ads which are shown in your AdSense blocks. So be sure to use these tags wisely, and keep the content in them tightly focused to the theme or topic of your website page.
