At this point, you are ready to get a domain name, get web hosting, and build a web site.

If you have never built a web site, even the very thought of it can be daunting, but do not let that stop you. Remember, without your own web site, you do not really have your own business.

Follow these steps:

1) Search online for a web host. Email me and I will send you the one I use. Although it may be tempting to find the absolutely cheapest one on the market, you do tend to get what you pay for in web hosting. Think about it this way: if you are only paying per month for hosting, how much support can they feasibly offer you if you have questions? Just keep that in mind. If you are not familiar with html, you probably should go with a web host that provides a site builder or web templates--with those you just basically type into a form what you want to appear on the web site and then hit 'enter'. If you are familiar with html, or if you want to learn, Frontpage or Dreamweaver is probably a good bet. My understanding is that Dreamweaver has a 30 day free trial you can use to see if you like it; search online for the current web address for that. I personally use Frontpage and it is great for my needs.

2) Choose a domain name. You can probably get one through the web hosting company you choose for a reasonable price. Many of the companies will give you one free if you pay for a year upfront; they will usually give you a discount if you pay in advance, also. Keep these things in mind: if you are going to be giving out your web site address offline a lot, you want to go with something that is all one word, like: secretsofinternetsuccess dot com. If you are less concerned about people typing it in, but want better search engine results long term, you are better off placing a dash between each word like this: secrets-of-internet-success dot com.

In the modern world, creating a website is part art and part science. It simply means that one must know how to build a website that is different from all the others because of its individual creativity and unique artistic design.

Whatever is your goal, whether for personal use or commercial, the basic process remains the same. This article gives a step-by-step instruction on how to build a website.

First basic step: Define website purpose.

Websites today are built for all kinds of reasons. Defining your website purpose will determine many things, such as the tools you need. Therefore: it is essential to have a plan for your website.

You must have a clear idea of direction you want to take your website in terms of its appearance, functionality and scaleability. This term means how much you want to expand by adding various functionalities. Set a proper plan so you will be able to progress forward smoothly.

Follow this instruction. Answer the following questions and remember them as you begin your project. Keep the answers in mind when you go about choosing your domain name, hosting provider and developing your web-pages. This will serve as your guide on the right track and ensure that you are working toward your ultimate goal.

Why are you creating a web-site?
Is your purpose recreation or to make money?
Who are your targeted users?
What capabilities do you want your site to have?
How often do you plan on updating your site?
Are you planning on doing it yourself or hiring a professional?
What are your plans for your site in the next 1-2 years?
What about in the next 3-5 years?

Second basic step: Website domain registration & website hosting

Your domain name (www.yoursite.com) is your identity online which will make people recall your website. It must be simple and short so it can be easily remembered.

If your purpose is just to own a simple personal website without any financial objectives, you can make your domain name anything you want (as long as it is not taken by someone else). But if your purpose is commercializing and monetizing your idea online, your domain name is very important.

Yes, a good domain name is very important but you can only work with what is available. More than 60% of website traffic is gained from search engine referrals and your position on these engines will determine your success for the most part.

Once people get to know your website and they see how good it is, they will begin to bookmark it so that they can visit it next time. It follows that the longer your site has been on the Internet, the bigger the percentage of direct visits (visitors who either type in your URL directly or have your site bookmarked) will be. Use Google Analytics for this purpose for it is excellent and best of all 100% free.

A host is a service provider that allows you to set your website on their server so that it can be found and viewed on the Internet. A hosting server will make your website visible online. Buying your own server is quite expensive or you can pay a nominal fee to a host provider. The host provider will house your website files on their servers that provide the platform to make your website visible and allow you to add to and update your website at anytime.

Once you settled for a host provider, they will provide you with instructions to upload your website's pages to their server. Uploading makes use of File Transfer Protocol ("FTP") which is utility software. FTP makes it possible for computers to communicate and share information. This is the most common and easiest way to upload and publish your website online.

A file upload option will be provided by your host which helps you manage your website as it is readily accessible in the control panel. In case this is not offered, you will need an independent FTP program like FileZilla. It is very efficient and it is 100% free to download. Others are available which will cost between $20-70.

Third basic step: Website design & good quality content

Website design

Your service provider may provide you with website building tools that will save you the extra step of looking for an external website building program. On your own to create your web pages, there are a few ways you can go about this:

1. Learn HTML programming and program a website from scratch (something I do not recommend initially),

2. Purchase a website creation program for a small cost,

3. Use one of the free programs available on the Internet, or

4. Purchase a basic program and then manually add to it and modify it with HTML patches and scripts overtime as your website develops.

Quality content

The essential feature of any website is its content. Learning how to build a website goes hand in hand with content management. Your website will never succeed without much quality content that is valuable to your visitors.

Success or failure of your website will depend on the way you organize and present your information whether you are providing a product at a price advantage or expert information on a particular subject matter. Valuable information presented is the formula to success online.

If your purpose is to create a personal recreational website that just a few friends, family and colleagues can access then you don't need to be concern with content. You can easily create your family tree and post it online for the rest to see, or a couple put up a wedding site leading up to the wedding where friends and family can wish them and sign up for gift registries. Some sites are also used for academic purposes where a professor might post class material and homework assignments.

If your purpose is to make money online, just follow these last 2 basic steps to insure success.

Fourth basic step: Optimizing & marketing your website

Search Engine Optimization ("SEO")

The most powerful technique to get your site noticed is through search engine optimization which has your site indexed by search engines and ranked higher in search engine search results. It is very effective for it helps you gain organic credibility. (Organic means natural – non paid exposure) Your credentials will be recognized and you will be rewarded by search engines by placing your site higher in searches when people are looking for your products and services.

SEO includes:

1. Submitting your website to search engines to tell them there is a new site.

2. Populating your web content with the appropriate key words, descriptions, title tags and meta tags so that the search engine spiders can find it amidst the millions of sites in cyberspace right now

Search Engine Marketing ("SEM")

SEM is SEO done outside your website. It has to do with external marketing efforts to advertise and promote your website.

Some examples are printing and distributing business cards and flyers with your URL on it (web address), advertising your site in magazines or placing certain banner adds on other similar but non-competing websites. Pay per click advertising is also a component of SEM

Fifth basic step: Ways to make money online

After creating your website, you are now prepared to make money online. If you want to make money online but have no tangible product to sell, this is not a major problem. For those of you who have or will be creating ecommerce websites(online stores that sell a tangible product) the information discussed above is very much relevant for you.

Much information online are available on how to build a website. In fact the process is very simple. Just do the first 3 basics steps; then depending on your website purpose, follow the 4th and 5th steps
